The adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, influenced not only the birth of the world’s largest democracy but also a historic break from the traumatic shadows of British colonial rule. The Indian Independence Act of 1947 formally ended British sovereignty over the subcontinent, it was the Constitution that truly enriched India’s status as a sovereign nation in terms of social, political, and ideological aspects. The Act of 1947 granted freedom, but it was the Constitution that ensured that this freedom was grounded in a comprehensive vision of self-governance, equality, and justice. Before its adoption, there were significant fears that the British, through strategic political movements such as the Partition and through continued administrative influence, might continue to exert indirect control over the Indian subcontinent, especially over the newly formed dominions of India and Pakistan.
